Sam and Jerusha Cowdery had an early relationship in CT and after he arrived in McLean County he hoped to meet up with her again. Sam had left CT on 9 Nov. 1836 on horseback and after 8 weeks he arrived in Bloomington on 3 Jan. 1837. Sam invested in two plots of timberland plus 80 acres of prairie north of town and wanted to farm. He proposed to Jerusha and they were married on 5 Feb. 1837. Jerusha taught at the Bloomington Academy for girls and in Sept. 1838 a cholera epidemic swept through and Jerusha died at age 27. Sam completed his house and in 1840 he moved in. He ventured to CT to bring back his mother and sisters. After their arrival a log fell and crushed him and he died a few days later at age 36.
