Son of Benjamin Knapp and Sarah Smith. Husband of Nancy Shaw.
From the Fishkill Standard, 1870: John Knapp-The Centenarian.

In our last issue we noted the death of Mr. John Knapp, of East Fishkill, and having since learned some additional facts in regard to the deceased, deem the case worthy of more than the passing notice we then gave it. Mr. Knapp was born and always resided on the farm where he died, which is situated near Farmer's Mills. When about twenty-one years of age he married and built a house on the opposite side of the road from the one in which his parents had resided, cutting the trees in the primitive forest and framing them on the spot where they grew. Here he and his wife lived and raised a family of 14 children, 9 sons and 5 daughters.

In This house he resided till the ravages of time rendered it uncomfortable, when a few years since he erected another dwelling adjoint it, leaving the old house still standing. His age is not certainly known, as the old family Bible in which it was recorded had become worm-eaten and illegible. The lowest estimate makes it 100 years the 8th of this month, while other, and probably with full as much reason, fit it at 103 years.

During his many years he enjoyed remarkably good health, till within a few months of his death and never required the services of a physician but twice; one of these times on account of injuries which he received by being thrown from a young horse which he was breaking. His wife, who was some 3 years younger, died a few years since at a good old age. Two of the sons were twins, and our informant says he remembers seeing the mother holding both her babies on her lap and spinning flax on a little wheel. At other times, he has seen the father and mother well mounted, each with a little one in from of them, passing along the road at full gallop, on the way to take tea at some neighbor's house, or on some other errand of pleasure or business.

As near as can be ascertained they have had some 370 descendants. Mr. Job Knapp, of Glenham, is one of the twins mentioned. Since the above was in type we have learned on good authority that Mr. Knapp was about 103 years old. He was present at the draft of Fishkill Village in May, 1812, and was excused because he would be 45 in a few days. That was 58 years ago this month.
