U.S. Congressman. Born in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, he attended the law department of William and Mary College and served in the U.S. Army during the War of 1812. After the war, he was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Smithfield, Virginia. He was a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, (1815-17, 28-31) and served in the Virginia State Senate, (1839-43). In 1843, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth, Twenty-ninth, and Thirtieth Congresses, serving until 1849. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he served as prosecuting attorney for Isle of Wight County, Virginia and practiced law. He died at age 79 in Smithfield, Virginia.
