DECATUR -- Richard D. McElroy, 69, of Decatur died 9:45 a.m. Wednesday (Feb. 14, 1996) in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Donald Wolford presiding. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in J.J. Moran & Sons Funeral Home with 4 p.m. vigil prayer service. Burial will be in Boiling Springs Cemetery. Memorials: St. Patrick Elementary School education program, St. Teresa High School education program or Decatur Memorial Hospital Home Care.
Richard was born in Aurora on Jan. 13, 1927, the son of Earl and Genevieve ``Toots'' Miller McElroy. He was affiliated with St. Patrick Church and was a member of American Legion Post 105 and Midwest Operating Engineers. He was a supervisor and operator of heavy road equipment and retired from Plote Inc. in Elgin in 1990. He was a Navy veteran. He married Elizabeth ``Betty'' Kleckner on March 31, 1951, in Aurora.
Surviving are his wife, Betty; sons, Michael McElroy and wife Lynn, Patrick McElroy and wife Barbara and Timothy McElroy and wife Leslie, all of Decatur; daughters, Ellen Kenworth of Springfield; Ann McElroy of Decatur; sister, Sally Cocks and husband Tom of Tomahawk, Wis.; grandchildren, Hilary and Colin Runion, Matthew McElroy, Byrnes Kenworth, Conor McElroy, Brennan McElroy, Colleen Athey and Dixie McElroy; lifelong friend, William ``Bill'' Tangney and wife Betty.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James E. McElroy.
