Palatkans learned with sincere regret the passing of Dr. Luther Burgess Bridgers Sr. (1884-1948), who died Thursday night in an Atlanta hospital, following a short illness. Funeral services were held at Spring Hill, with interment in Alta Vista Cemetery, Gainesville, Ga., with Rev. W. Rembert Sissions and Dr. Wallace Rogers, Methodist ministers of Atlanta, officiating. During the few months Dr. Bridgers served as supply pastor of St. James Methodist Church here, he made many friends and was active in community affairs. An eloquent and forceful speaker, a gifted vocalist, a tireless worker of the evangelistic order, he, with Mrs. Bridgers, pianist and vocalist, rendered valued service to both church and community. The following sketch is taken from the Atlanta Journel:
Dr. Bridgers, age 64, former pastor of the Haygood Methodist Church here, had been a member of the North Georgia Conference for 37 years, and a minister since the age of 19. A native of Margarettsville, N.C, he spent his boyhood in Norfolk and Portsmouth, Va., but became an adopted Georgian. He had made his home in Gainesville since retirement, some three years ago. He had served as pastor of the Trinity Methodist Church and the Inman Park Methodist Church in Atlanta. He started construction of the handsome new church during the five years he was pastor of the Haygood Methodist Church. Failing health forced his retirement, but he had continued to serve as an evangelist and had been on a special mission for Bishop Arthur Moore at Palatka, Fla., for the past six months. Dr. Bridgers, who studied for the ministry at Ashbury College, Wilmore, Ky., preached all over the nation during the many years he spent as a general evangelist for the Methodist Church. Following World War I, he helped establish missions in Czechoslovakia and Belgium, and aided church rehabilitation in Russia. Surviving are his wife, the former Mrs. Aline Winborn of Gainesville, Ga., former head of the Conservatory at Shorter College; a son, Luther B. Bridgers, Jr., of Atlanta; a sister, Mrs. Robert Stephenson of Norfolk, Va., two grandsons, Luther B. Bridgers, III, and James Robert Bridgers of Gainesville, and three nephews.
