Obituary – paper must be in David City, Nebraska: Date of death was May 30, 1897

A.W. Rathbun:

Came from Chicago to David City 16 years ago, and has resided in and near this place ever since. His first business here was a money loaner. He afterwards bought a section of land one mile east of town and went into the stock feeding and shipping business. He was quite reserved in his manner of living and little of the particulars of his former life were known to his most intimate friends. Few knew him except through business transactions, through which way he had made and retained a large circle of friends who loved and respected him.

Monday of last week he went to Omaha to purchase some cattle but did not find the price to suit him and returned home later in the week. Friday he was in town and complained some of not feeling very well – thought he had strained himself clambering over the stock yards. His complaint grew worse and Saturday Drs. Chamberlain and Stewart were in consultation over his case. Not being able to afford any relief, Dr. Hewitt of Bellwood was called Sunday evening and after consultation with the attending physicians, his case was pronounced fatal and Mr. Rathbun was told that his life would last but a few hours at most. He seemed perfectly composed and went about the matter of arranging his business in his usual business way. Judge A. J. Evans was named as his executor and his affairs placed in his hands.

His trouble was a complication of internal disruptions brought about by inflammation of the bladder, and at a few minutes past 2 o'clock he passed peacefully away. His nephew, who had been staying with him for the past few months, was the only relative with him at the time of his death. After a short service at the house conducted by Rev. Schwimley, the remains were placed on the 1:45 pm Northwestern train, accompanied by his nephew, to Hartford, Trumbull county, Ohio, where his brother and mother, the latter 89 years old, still reside, there to be interred by the side of his wife who preceded him 29 years ago.
