Norman Scotty Aitken, 92, of Springfield died Wednesday morning February 17, 2010 surrounded by his family at his home. Norman, son of the late James L. and Mary (Dawson) Aitken was born in Springfield on September 10, 1917. Raised in Springfield he graduated from Springfield Trade High School.
Norman was employed as a machinist for 30 years at the former Gilbert and Barker, Company. He then worked as an assistant steamfitter for the City of Springfield for 12 years and retired in 1982. Norman served his country during WWII with the United States Army.
A lifelong resident of Springfield, Norman was a member of the Red Cross Gallon Club, a member of Foster Memorial Church and an usher and active member at the former Wesley Methodist Church in Springfield. Norman enjoyed doing everything with his family, camping in Rhode Island, going to the beach, and being an avid Yankees fan. He was a Golden Member and instructor for many years at the Y.M.C.A. where he taught handball and racquetball. Norman was a semi pro boxer having fought in Holyoke and won the middle weight title.
An avid golfer he shot a hole in one at Wycoff Country Club and also enjoyed playing the sport of handball. Norman will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was the greatest father and an All Around Damn Nice Guy.
In addition to his parents Norman was predeceased by his brother George Aitken and his wife Claire, and his three faithful companions, Dusty, Heather, and Lord Bozo. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Helen (Barnes) Aitken; two daughters, Beverly Aitken of Springfield and Sandra Howard and her husband Donald May of Wilbraham; a granddaughter, Brooke Jamie Bencivenga and her husband Sergio; and two great grandchildren, Cameron and Mia; and his faithful companion Annie Laurie.
Visiting hours for Norman will be held on Sunday afternoon Feb 21, 2010 from 2-5 p.m. at Sampsons Chapel of the Acres Funeral Home, 21 Tinkham Road, Springfield. A funeral home service will be conducted on Monday morning February 22, 2010 at 11 a.m. Rites of Committal and Burial with Military Honors will follow in Hillcrest Park Cemetery, 895 Parker Street, Springfield.
