William Eaton Lockhart, Jr. died from an accident as a result of a cave in at Fort Howes Ranger Station in the Custer National Forest.

Born in Lincoln Co., MT, William spent his formative years there, and in Miles City, Choteau and Bozeman, MT, as the family moved with his father's career as a forest ranger.

William enrolled at Montana State University in Missoula, but his studies were interrupted by W.W.II.

William entered the air forces in 1942. As a pilot of a B-24 heavy bomber, he flew 30 missions out of England. He was discharged as a first lieutenant in September of 1945. Included in his decorations for his service were the air medal and three oak leaf clusters.

Post war, William returned to his studies at the university in Missoula. He was state president of De Molay in 1946 and a member of the legion of honor and the Chevalier degree of the organization. He was a member of the Druids National Forestry Scholastic fraternity and president of the university forestry club in 1947-1948. He graduated from the forestry school at MSU in Missoula in the spring of 1948 and started his career with the Forest Service that same spring.

William was married to Marion E. Headley in Cutbank, MT, on July 10, 1948.

William was survived by his widow, Marion; his mother, Mary; a brother, Russell; and a sister, Mary Belle (Douglas) Sheppard.
