William, who resided at 417 South Broom Street, Wilmington, Delaware, served as a Torpedoman's Mate, 2nd Class on the U.S.S. Zellars (DD-777), U.S. Navy during World War II.

The Zellars, while screening the battleship Tennessee , was attacked by three Japanese planes. The Zellars shot down two of them however the third one crashed into the port side forward of the bridge in her number 2 handling room.

William was "Killed In Action" in this attack.

He had served in the Navy for three years at the time of his death and was awarded the Purple Heart.
