Richard Crocker Served the Town He Loved - Obituary - Richard G. Crocker - Richard G. Crocker, of Amherst, died Monday, February 7, 2005 in his home, after a courageous battle with melanoma cancer. Mr. Crocker was born September 11, 1929 in Cambridge, MA, son of Richard S. & Esther G. Crocker. He was a resident of Amherst for 72 years. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 48 years, Jean (Davis) Crocker, who passed away July 31, 2004. They were married September 15, 1956 in the Congregational Church of Amherst. Mr. Crocker was a member of the Amherst High School, Class of 1947, graduating from the Brick School. He served his country bravely, serving four years in the US Marine Corps and was a veteran of the Korean War. he served with the 1st Marine Division and took part in the Pusan Perimeter defense, Inchon landing, capture of Seoul; Chosin Reservoir Campaign; and Operation Killer; which earned him five battle stars. He served the town he loved as Road Agent and Director of Public Works for over 40 years, retiring in 1996. He was also a member of the Lawrence Engine Company and the Amherst Fire Department for 37 years, retiring as 1st Assistant Chief. Mr. Crocker was a life member of the 1st marine Division Association, as well as the National and New England chapter of the "Chosin Few." Mr. Crocker was also a member of the Marine Corp Heritage Foundation, Amherst Historical Society and the American Truck Historical Society. He was a member of the national and New Hampshire chapter of The Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motorized Fire Apparatus and of the Amoskeag Reserve Engine Company. Mr. Crocker enjoyed gardening, collecting fire and Amherst memorabilia; jig saw puzzles, and especially playing the role of Buppa to his six grandchildren. He is survived by his son, Stephen D. Crocker and his wife, Brenda and their three children, Garrett Mello, Riannon and Stephen of Nashua; his son, Richard E. and his wife Libb Crocker and their three daughters, Heather, Andrea and Kimberly of Amherst; and daughter, Dorothy I. Crocker of Amherst; his twin sister, Essie Crocker of Kalamazoo, MI; and brother, Thomas Crocker of Dataw Island, SC; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
