George M. Smith, son of J. R. and Elizabeth Smith, was born at Nora, Joe Davis County, Illinois, November 16, 1861. Here he lived until about 13 years of age when he came to Lincoln County with his parents. They remained at that place a few years, until they moved farther west and purchased a farm near Gretna. He was one of the many who made the run when the Oklahoma strip was opened. In later years he moved to the farm southeast of Glade, and he had since made his home there.

November 29, 1899, he was united in marriage to Joyce Brower. To this union two children were born: a daughter who died in infancy and a son, Wilson H., with whom he has made his home for the past nine years with the exception of one year spent at Borger, Texas. He was the oldest of four brothers, a member of the Masonic order and a Knight Templar.

Mrs. Smith died November 23, 1909. March 13, 1934, after a short illness, the home was again saddened and George M. Smith departed at the age of 73 years, 3 months and 25 days. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, one sister and one brother.

Those left to mourn his death are his son, Wilson; two sisters, Ida Meyers, Jefferson, Oklahoma; May Perkins of Kansas City, Missouri; and two brothers, Sherman and Charlie of Kirwin and two grandchildren, Louise and Everett Smith, in addition to other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at 2:30 from the Methodist church of Kirwin by the Rev. G. C. Milner, assisted by Rev. Ray McMillan of Glade. Frank Brotemarkle, Ronald Royce, Mrs. Carl Ronan, Mrs. Frank Brotemarkle and Miss Bertha Stuckman furnished special music. The Masonic lodge of Phillipsburg was in charge of services at the grave.
