Bertha Jupe Henrick
Bertha Teresa Jupe, the oldest daughter of Carl and Fredericka Jupe, was born July 25, 1854, in Keonegsfelt, Saxony, Germany.

She was educated in the public schools and confirmed in the Lutheran church. She emigrated to America when 17 years old with her mother, two sisters, and her youngest brother to join the father and two older brothers in Fon du Lac, Wisconsin.

After two years there, they came to a claim near Logan, Kansas, where she met Michael Henry HeMrick to whom she was united in marriage January 2, 1874, at Kirwin.

To this union four daughters were born:
Clara Alma who died at the age of two years
Mrs. Amelia E. Fox of Severy, Kansas
Mrs. Helen E. Clonch of Phillipsburg
Mrs. Addie B. Wheaton of Phillipsburg (Mrs. W. A. Wheaton)

The husband died June 29, 1901, and she was the last of her family of four brothers and three sisters. She leaves as survivors, three daughters and 14 grandchildren. There are three adult grandchildren: Harold A. Wheaton, Mrs. Ruth Smith, and Lester Leo Fox who have preceded her in death. Also surviving are 40 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Thus on August 9th, at the age of 94 years and 14 days, she went to be with our Lord and Savior, where there is no sorrow or pain.

Mrs. Hemrick was a Civil War widow, possibly the last in this county.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, August 11 at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church with Rev. F. M. McDonald in charge and the Simmons-Olliff Funeral Home directing. Norva Jean Wolfe and Pauline and Norma Harper furnished special music with Mrs. Frank Hahn, accompanist. Interment was in the Kirwin cemetery.
