Roy Fred Deppen was born on July 5, 1913, at Kirwin, Kansas, the son of Canby N. and Blanche Morgan Deppen. He grew to manhood in the Kirwin area and attended both grade and high school there.
On November 25, 1940, he was called to duty in the armed forces thus being one of the first World War II inductees from Phillips County. He served his country during World War II and received the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon and the American Defense Ribbon. He received his Honorable discharge on April 3, 1945, at Camp Carson, Colorado.
"Freddie" as he was known by all who knew him, was a man known for his honesty and devotion to his friends.
He departed this life at Kirwin, Kansas, having attained the age of 62 years. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by one sister, three brothers, other relatives, and many friends.
A memorial service was held December 22, 1975, at the Kirwin United Methodist Church with the Rev. Marvin Palmer as officiant.
Mary Kincaid, pianist, played the funeral selections.
Casket bearers were Paul Bucy, Jim Stockman, Maurice Guthrie, Gene Hall, Ralph Lare, and W. L. Johnson.
Interment was in the Kirwin Cemetery with military honors by the Kirwin American Legion.
