Daughter of Sophia Jewell and Thomas Clarkson Gage, granddaughter and namesake of suffragist grandmother, Matilda Joslyn Gage.
Niece of L. Frank Baum, who married Maude Gage in the Gage house in Fayetteville, NY in 1882. Baum often used family names in his stories, it was Matilda's younger sister Dorothy, b. and d. in 1898, that influenced the name of the heroine of OZ- Dorothy Gale. Note only one letter change from Gage to Gale. Uncle Henry's name came Baum's father-in-law Henry Gage, and suffragist Matilda frequently would sign letters to family with her initial "M"...there we get Auntie Em.
Matilda was a patron of the Dacotah Prairie Museum at Aberdeen and that is where I met her in 1976. We became friends and as she was losing her sight I would go to her home and help her with correspondence and do errands. It was from her I learned much about woman suffrage. She had a sleigh bed in her guest room that belonged to her noted grandmother; one that Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton slept in when they visited their friend and colleague in Fayetteville, NY.
