H. H. SAMPER, PRODUCE FIRM'S CHAIRMAN, DIES

Moberlyan Known for Scholarship, Church Gifts, Funeral Friday

Howad H. Stamper of Urbandale, head of the F. M. Stamper Company here since 1927, died at 11 o'clock last night in St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn., where he had gone several weeks ago for treatment of a heart ailment. His wife, Mrs. Merle Stamper, was with him.

Funeral services are to be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon in First Baptist Church by Dr. Blake Westmoreland. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Mr. Stamper was born Oct. 23, 1889, in Clifton Hill, the son of Finis McLean Stamper and Margaret Ann Richardson. He was educated in the schools of Clifton Hill and Moberly and at William Jewell College in Liberty.
Into Business in 1903

In 1903 he entered into a partnership with his father in the F. M. Stamper Co., produce dealers. After the death of his father in 1927 he became president of the company. The Stamper operations were widely expanded throughout Missouri and other states and the company's frozen food products now have nationwide distribution.

Mr. Stamper relinquished the presidency several years ago to his son, Howard A. Stamper, St. Louis, and became chairman of the board.

He was a member of the board of curators of William Jewell College, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity.

Baptist Church Leader

A member of the First Baptist Church of Moberly, he served for many years on its board of deacons and as chairman of the finance committee. He also was a member of Moberly Lodge 344, A. F. and A. M., and was past-president of the Moberly Rotary Club and a former director of the Moberly Chamber of Commerce.

Surviving besides his wife are the son, Howard A. Stamper, and a daughter, Miss Frances Ann Stamper, of St. Louis; three grandchildren, William David, John Howard and Jane Stamper, St. Louis; a step-daughter, Mrs. Romaine Scheiner and grandchildren, Cinthia and Scott Scheiner, Moberly; two sisters, Mrs. Will Fleming and Mrs. Virgil Wilhite, both of Urbandale; and a nephew, Dr. J. Will Fleming, Jr., Moberly.

A son, Marient Lt. David Warren Stamper was killed during World War II while piloting a Corsair fighter plane.

Following the death of his son, Mr. Stamper established the David Stamper Memorial Scholarships at Moberly Junior College, which has enabled a large number of graduate men students of the college to continue their studies in scientific fields.

After the death of his first wife, the former Verna Mahan, mother of his three children, he contributed in her memory the Stamper Memorial Carillon, which is placed in the tower of the First Baptist Church. He was married later to Miss Lolah Ellen Wayland, and after her death he established the Lolah Wayland Stamper Memorial Scholarship at William Jewell College.

At the University of Missouri Mr. Stamper sponsored a poultry scholarship, and the Stamper Company has sponsored for several years the Moberly Ban Johnson baseball team, known as the Stamper Stars.
Body Here Tonight

The body accompanied by Mrs. Stamper, Howard A. and Frances Ann Stamper, will arrive late tonight at the Mahan Funeral Home and will be taken to the Stamper home in Urbandale at noon tomorrow. Remaining there until noon Friday, it will then be taken to the First Baptist Church and will lie in state until 2 o'clock, the hour of the funeral services.
