(Notes from conversations with family members): Before entering the Army, Jess had a job as a horseback mail carrier. And then he was to go away to school. His mother, Clarissa, got his stuff all packed up and she had embroidered his name in all his clothes. Jess got on the train to go to the school. When next they heard from him, instead of going to school he had joined the Army! Jess had to lie about his age to join. Her served in the Army at Camp Bowie, Texas, and got out in 1917. After the Army he was helping his father, Charles Albert Raby, with some logging. The route they took from getting the wood went past the house of Lon (Alonzo) Welch. Lon and Charles were friends and in those days folks would stop and say hello and chat. Jess was on the back of the wagon and when it stopped, so Lon and Charles could talk, Lon's children came out as well. That is when Jess first met Ada. They began courting after that meeting and married at the end of 1917. Before his death, Jess returned to visit Franklin, NC, with one of his sons and he pointed out Lon's house with the front porch and said, "it was on that porch where I first saw Ada."
