Sadie was the 4th of Lucius Delbrick & Annie Delta (Curry) Love's 12 children.

Sadie & her sister, Lillian, lived to be the oldest of their siblings. Sadie was 93 when she died, & her sister, Lillian, was 96.

Sadie was married to Joseph "Jody" Thomas Osteen in Maury Co, TN on August 1, 1920. They had two children: Thomas Logan (who died as an infant) & Jewell. They divorced & Jody remarried around 1932. Sadie never remarried.

She gained a little notoriety when an article was published in the Herald on July 21, 1991, on her 92nd birthday.

92-YEAR-OLD STILL MAINTAINS ACTIVE, INDEPENDENT LIFESTYLE

She cooks, cleans, washes, irons, and gardens.

These things may be ordinary, everyday household chores, but performance by a 92-year-old puts them in the category of extraordinary.

Mrs. Sadie Osteen of Denham Avenue is celebrating her 92nd birthday today. No special birthday celebration is planned, but she said she will probably invite her minister and wife, Curtis and Wynona Dowdy, by for ice cream and cake.

Mrs. Osteen has made her home with her daughter, Jewell Thornton for the past several years. "I enjoy working in my flower gardens," said Mrs Osteen. "Jewell mows the yard, but the flowers are mine. I especially enjoy growing African violet."

She also has several tomato plants, but hasn't had ripe tomatoes yet.

"I do anything I want to do. I have always been active," Mrs. Osteen explained. "I was raised on a farm in the country and we did anything that had to be done. We didn't have all the modern conveniences back then."

Mrs. Osteen was reared in the Loves Branch community in the western part of Maury County. She recalls riding horseback to school behind her teacher when she was in the first grade. "When I first started school, my teacher came by and picked me up on horseback," said the sprightly lady.

As she grew older, she rode horseback by herself. "We didn't have buses back then, so everyone walked to school or rode horseback," she added. She also remembers attending a one-room school where one teacher taught all eight grades.

Mrs. Osteen has lived in Columbia since 1930 when she began work at Tennessee Knitting Mills where she was employed for more than 30 years. She retired in 1964.

"I don't know what we'd do without each other," said Jewell. "She took care of me when I was small and is still taking care of me."

"I couldn't think of sitting down and doing nothing and have Jewell come home from work with everything to do," said Mrs. Osteen.

In addition to her household chores and gardening, she does the laundry for her sister-in-law who is confined to a nursing home and prepares food for the sick and shut-ins of her church, Highland Avenue Church of Christ.

The 92-year-old attends the Ladies Wednesday Morning Bible Study at her church as ...

In 1972 Mrs. Osteen suffered a heart attack but almost 20 years later appears to be in relatively good health. "She got a good report from her doctor today (Monday)," Jewell said.

Mrs. Osteen has a granddaughter and great-grandson, Carolyn Thornton Autry and 11-year-old Leighton Autry, who lives in Bedford, Texas, and always looks forward to their visits here.

"Carolyn taught school at Hampshire and has lots of friends in Maury County," she said. "They were here for a visit in June and will be back before school starts in August."

Asked to what she attributed her longevity, Mrs. Osteen replied, "I guess just hard work and clean living."
