John was a Private in the Civil War, soldier of Co. "D", 9th Reg't Vt. At the time of the 1870 census of Chester, John and his wife Mary were living on a small farm as tenants in Gassetts, Chester's district #4.
On February 9, 1883. Mrs. J.L. Bemis left her husband and children to be with William S. Farnsworth of Chester, VT.
John died a tragic death in Chester, VT. He was killed by the noon mail train, a short distance from the Gassetts station. The train frightened his horse and Mr. Bemis was thrown from the sleigh and against the cars. His left leg was taken off above the ankle joint. The horse was slightly injured. He only lived about an hour and a half after the accident, remaining unconscious from the time he was struck. His funeral was held at his home in Gassetts.
He was survived by two sons, a daughter, three brothers and a sister. Josiah G. White served as administrator of the estate of J.L. Bemis, and made license to sell the real estate of the family in Gassetts.
