Alexander McDonald was born in Elbert County, Georgia, February 14, 1796. The family later moved to Tennessee, eventually Maury County. In Lincoln County, Alabama on November 24, 1818, Alexander married Katharine King Alexander, daughter of John Brown Alexander who would be an early pioneer of Vermilion County, Illinois.
According to tradition, McDonald moved to the Little Vermilion in 1820, returned to Edgar County to raise one crop and ten back to the Little Vermilion. We know that his daughter Elizabeth, was born there August 16, 1823. He is listed as a grand juror March 4, 1826.
McDonald farmed land which was bought after his death by Abraham Sandusky. The post office (Carroll) was in his house, and he served as assessor and collector for several years, also as a justice of the peace.
In March, 1840, the Mt. Pisgah Church was organized in their house and he served as an elder. Later the McDonalds moved to Georgetown where he was on the board of the Georgetown Seminary. We find him a charter member of the Georgetown Cumberland Presbyterian Church founded January 19, 1860. Alexander McDonald died January 2, 1861.
The McDonald children were: Aaron, Milton Allen, Nancy (married John Bailey), Elizabeth (married first Dr. H.W. Hill, then Oscar F. Harmon), Sarah (married Dr. H.H. Hill), Caroline (married Victor Leseure), and eleven other who died young or in infancy.
