Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he was a lawyer in practice when he joined the Union Army and was a commissioned a Captain in the 5th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. He was transferred to the 11th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry as a Major, took part in the Battle of Antietam and was promoted Lieutenant Colonel in June, 1862. He then commanded the regiment at the Battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, and was promoted Colonel in January 1864. At the beginning of the Spring 1864 Overland Campaign, he was placed at the head of a brigade of the XVIII Corps and at the Battle of Petersburg, he was fatally wounded and died on August 6, 1864. He was posthumously brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers for “gallant and meritorious services before Petersburg, Va.”
