Uncle George Bilyeu, one of Christian County's pioneers, died at his home west of town at an early hour on Monday morning, 18 March 1895.
The Call-Mail takes pleasure in presenting this week, a most excellent portrait of Uncle George Bilyeu, one of Christian County's pioneers who died at his home west of town on 18 March. Uncle George has resided in this vicinity nearly half a century and during his life drew about him a multitude of friends and admirers. He had been a life long member of the Christian church, and politically he was democrat of the Andrew Jackson stripe. His funeral services were held Wednesday morning last at the Christian church west of town and was largely attended. By request, his obituary is a reprint of last week. George Bilyeu was born in Overton County, Tennessee, on 12 December 1815 and died on 18 March 1895. He moved to Sangamon County, Illinois in 1829 and married Elizabeth Workman in 1840. He moved to Christian County in 1850 where he has resided for forty-five years. He was the father of 12 children, 6 boys and 6 girls; six of whom survive him - three boys and three girls.
