Magdalena "Lena" M. Meyerhofer, age 88, formerly of Elburn, passed away peacefully at the Rosewood Care Center, St. Charles, early Wednesday morning, December 20, 2000.
She was born September 21, 1912 in Aurora, IL, the daughter of Joseph and Katherine (Smith) Kiefer. Lena grew up in Batavia Township in what is now Marywoods (called "Big Woods" in those days). One of eight children, Lena helped raise her siblings and was employed outside the home, as a housekeeper, as well. She later became employed at Operadio (DuKane) in St. Charles, where she worked until 1973 when she retired after 22 years.
On October 20, 1937, she was united in marriage to Frank N. Meyerhofer and they made their home in Aurora. In the years that followed, they also lived in Elmhurst and St. Charles, until 1945, when they became one of the early "pioneers" of western Kane County, and they settled near Lily Lake on Rt. 47. Frank and Lena enjoyed the deer and wildlife that came to their yard from the nearby woods and even managed to tame a young fox as a house pet. Lena was an avid reader and loved to croquet as long as her hands permitted. She made afghans and other articles which she shared with her family and friends. One of her greatest joys was planting flowers and bushes around their home. Following Fank's death in 1990, Lena continued to make her own home for a few years before moving to Asbury Court, Aurora. More recently, she had become a resident at Rosewood Care Center in St. Charles.
She is survived by a sister, Violet Kiefer of Crestwood, IL, and a brother, Elmer (Phyllis) Kiefer of Aurora; her special friends, Bill and Betty Amery and their children, John and Stephanie Amery; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She now joins her parents, her husband, Frank, seven brothers and sisters, and one daughter, Carol Amery, who preceded her in death.
Visitation will be held from 9-10 a.m. Saturday, December 23, 2000, at St. Gall Church, Elburn, where her funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Fr. Richard Paddock will officiate and interment will follow at St. Gall Cemetery, Elburn.
