James M JONES came from VA and settled in Rhone Co TN by the late 1700s or early 1800s. He married Nancy BUTLER in 1810 in TN. It is believed that James M Jones' father was Thomas JONES living in Anderson Co (adjacent to Roane on the SW) - he was on the 1802 tax list there. A neighbor was Jacob BUTLER whose daughter Nancy married James M. Jones below. Thomas Jones was reported to have been born in Va. about 1745.
Notice James M Jones names his first child, a son, Thomas.

We believe our James was most likely a soldier in the war of 1812 – fought with Captain Christian's Company in Gen. John Brown's regiment (that regiment was formed from men of Roane and Anderson Cos.)

James M. Jones and Nancy Butler Jones had fourteen children:

Sons Thomas, William, James, and Wiley left with their parents and migrated to Hancock Co, Illinois about 1851. One son, Henry Jackson JONES, b. ca 1814 remained in Rhone Co TN until his death in 1875. Henry Jackson's son, William J. JONES, b 1849 moved to Webster Co. Missouri and died there in 1894.
