Harris Gibson Terry was the oldest child of Champness Jernigan Terry and Rachel Gibson, daughter of Rutha Dawkins and Nelson Gibson Jr. He was a deputy sheriff of Richmond County.
On November 11, 1854, he married widow Sarah Jane (nee Gibson) Covington. To this union were born Mary Alice, Preston and Gibson Terry.
On January 30, 1864, he married Mary Alice Jane Long. Their children were Harris Jr, James, Robert, Mary Lily, Emma Jane, William Gibson, John, Champ, Harriet, Ida and Etta Terry.
