Later, Clare, after having been the guest of a Benedictine monastery in Bastia Umbra, established the own residence at the nearby church of San Damiano, where he was soon joined by several women who were willing to follow his example and her vocation. In 1212 she founded the Order of Poor Clares, adopting the simple franciscan rules of poverty and prayer. Nevertheless, in 1215 these rules were replaced by the Benedictine rule, as established by the Fourth Lateran Council. She followed during her life a rigorous conduct of absolute poverty and seclusion, despite her illness. In 1253 Pope Innocent IV ratified the rule of poverty as "privilege of poverty". Just two years after her death, happened because of the effects of an extreme lifestyle, on August 15, 1255, Pope Alexander IV proclaimed her a Saint.
