DEATH CLAIMS MOTHER OF TAX COLLECTOR;
Mrs. D. A. Brown, mother of County Tax Collector Quitmon Brown and DeSoto County Resident for the last 35 years, died Thursday, December 29, at her home, 150 Sumter Avenue.
Mrs. Brown was born September 15, 1883, in Brundige, Alabama, and came to DeSoto County in 1925, living for many years in Nocatee before moving to Arcadia several years ago. She was a member of the Baptist Church.
Mrs. Brown is survived by her husband D.A. Brown of LaBelle, Elma Brown and Quitmon Brown, both of Arcadia; six daughters, Mrs. J.W. Garrett, Nocatee, Mrs. C.E. Harden, Okeechobee, Mrs. Eva Budd, Tampa, Mrs. Roy McDuffie of Emporia, Kansas, Mrs. J.M. Whidden of Bradenton, and Mrs. Vernon H. Tuttle of Miami; a sister, Mrs. Ida Castelow, who lives in Alabama. Twenty-six grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren also, survive.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon from the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Orden Rice and the Rev. J.J. Martin officiating. Burial was in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Carson Bates, C. O. Weaver, Grover Holland, W. L. Woods and W. B. Tinsley.
Honorary pallbearers were W. L. Mattison, Chester Roberts, Henry Wood, George Proctor, Dr. H.S. Agnew, Judge Gordon Hays, Bob Keley, C. E. Adams and M. R. Allison.
