She died in San Leandro, CA, where she had been visiting her California kids. Ruth was the daughter of Elsie (Gerland) and Gustav Heldke. She was raised, along with her brothers, aunts, and uncles, by her grandmother Emma Gerland in Rice Lake, WI after the early deaths of her parents. Her two brothers, Richard and Paul Heldke, both of Rice Lake, WI, preceded her in death.
Ruth graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1947, and then attended Wartburg College. While living in Rice Lake after college, she worked at the movie theater as well as at a local bank. About that time, she met and later married her husband of fifty eight years, Robert G. Fallis. They moved to Eau Claire in 1953 and raised four children, W. Mikel Fallis (Sacramento, CA), Paula K. Fallis (deceased), Eva M. Fallis (with Michael Hill, San Leandro, CA) and Gloria A. Fallis (with Steve Ashenbrucker, Park Falls, WI).
Ruth was an amazing seamstress. She began by making clothing for her family, and continued to do so throughout her life. In 1966 she took her sewing to a new level. She attended a few technical college classes and then launched her home-based drapery business. She successfully ran Fallis Draperies for over forty years. During those years, Ruth designed, fabricated and installed draperies and other interior design features for people throughout the Chippewa Valley and beyond. Her talents continue to impress those who know her work. Due to age and poor health, she officially closed her business in 2007. She then focused on using up leftover fabrics by making fabulous bags, purses, and quilts.
When her husband Robert died suddenly in 2008, Ruth's life fell apart and she never recovered. We hope she has been reunited with him and now rests in peace.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 19th at St. John's Lutheran church in Eau Claire, WI.
Visitation will be prior to the service, from 10 to 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will follow.
Interment will be in the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery in Spooner, WI on Tuesday, April 20th at 11:00 a.m. Memorial donations may be directed to either the Chippewa Valley Theatre Guild, or the Chippewa Valley Symphony, whose performances were regularly attended and enormously enjoyed by both Ruth and Bob Fallis.
