He was the eldest of four sons and educated in a private academy in Lee, Massachusettes and later was at the Sing Sing Academy.
His father was the owner of Charles Van Benthuysen and Sons, a printing firm in Albany and he started working for his father when he was but 15 years old. For 15 years he was the manager of his father's paper mills in Cohoes and Castleton. In 1881, he assumed charge of the printing company.
Trustee of Albany Medical College, was active in the Madison Avenue Dutch Reformed Church.
Also had a love for building machinery.
