William J Davis was born in Wales near Merthyr Tydfil, probably at Dowlais, son of John and Ann Davis. He married Eliza Morgan on 21 Oct 1861 at Merthyr Tydfil, and they had a son David, daughter Mary Jane and son William Jr before sailing to America about 1870. William came over first, finding work as a coal miner in Tremont, Schuylkill County. His wife and children followed in 1871, and they added a daughter Lizzie in 1872. However, their son William Jr died sometime between 1870 and 1880.
William moved his family to Scranton where he continued as a miner, then ran a tavern at 1802 Cedar Ave for several years in the late 1880's (still there in 2012, operating as Kelly's). William J Davis had contracted "miners' asthma" and became an invalid for a period of time before his death at home in 1903.
