b. May 25, 1841, enlisted in company G, 49th O.V.I. in August 1861, was killed at Chicamauga, in the forenoon of Sunday, September 20, 1863, bd. in the National cem. at Chattanooga. He was over six feet tall and muscular." Hugh Welch Duncan "The Duncan and Gibson Families 1905. John was born in Texas Township.

Note:Hugh Welch Duncan was his younger brother, barely 11 years old when his brother was killed in action, and his other brother, Andrew Cathcart Duncan, was captured in the same battle, to die of starvation the following year at Andersonville. The 49th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was raised by his uncle, Col. William Harvey Gibson, later Adjutant General of Ohio.
