Note:Hugh Welch Duncan was his younger brother, barely 11 years old when his brother was killed in action, and his other brother, Andrew Cathcart Duncan, was captured in the same battle, to die of starvation the following year at Andersonville. The 49th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was raised by his uncle, Col. William Harvey Gibson, later Adjutant General of Ohio.
