Payton Smith Alexander was enrolled in the military on 23 May 1846 at Commerceville, Giles County, TN into Captain Hayes Company, 1st regiment of Tennessee Infantry and mustered in on 8 June 1846 at the aforesaid place. He served for a tem of one year and was mustered out in New Orleans, LA on 31 May 1846. He was present with the Regiment on 31 October 1846 near the Sal Colonnades, Texas during the Mexican War. He was later enrolled as a Union soldier on 9 December 1863 into D Company, 14th Regiment (Bradford's Regiment) of Tennessee Cavalry in Union City Tennessee for a term of three years. He was mustered into service as a Corporal on 20 January 1864 at Columbus, KY. He was with his company when it was stationed at Fort Pillow to defend that post. When Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forest attacked the Fort, the entire garrison was either killed or taken prisoner. Payton was captured and taken to Andersonville, GA. On 11 September 1864, Payton died at Andersonville of disease and dysentery. He is buried at the National Cemetery at Andersonville, GA. His wife Licinda applied for and received a pension of 12 dollars a month until her death on 4 May 1911.
