On 30 Jul 1863 Patrick, a cuirier, mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Beverly, Essex County, Massachusetts.

Patrick joined, together with his brother John Sullivan, who would later give a statement for the widow's pension.

He was declared missing in action on 14 Oct 1863 at Bristoe Station, Virginia.

He died on 11 Aug 1864 at Andersonville, Sumter County, Georgia, of disease, as a prisoner of war, according to a statement in Ellen's widow's pension file.
