A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania, June 4, 1861, mustered into federal service at Baltimore, Maryland, July 26 as a private with Co. E, 1st Pennsylvania Reserves (30th Pennsylvania Infantry), and appointed color bearer the following September 10. On October 18, 1861, he was elected to the position of 1st lieutenant but never mustered at the rank, although he acted in that capacity until December 10, 1861, when he was reduced to private, reason not stated in his compiled military service records, although ill health may have been the cause. On January 31, 1862, he was re-promoted to 2nd sergeant and assigned to recruiting duty until April 18, 1862, and a month later hospitalized at Carver U.S. Hospital in Philadelphia, there discharged by surgeon's certificate to date June 17, 1862, by reason of "disease of the heart . . . mitral regurgitation." Despite that dire diagnosis, he enlisted in Strasburg, Lancaster County, June 29, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis, mustered into state service at Lancaster July 7 as 1st sergeant of Co. B, 50th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company August 15, 1863. He last enlisted and mustered into federal service at Philadelphia February 2, 1864, as a private with Battery A, 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (152nd Pa). Captured at Plymouth, North Carolina, on April 17, 1864, he was incarcerated in the stockade at Andersonville, Georgia, where he died.
