Miss Josephine "Jo" Moss, 88, passed away on Sunday April 11, 2010. Josephine was born October 20, 1921 in Lake Charles, Louisiana to Columbus Joseph Moss and Idonia Vincent Moss. She graduated from St. Charles Academy in 1940 and entered into the order of Marianites of the Holy Cross, taking the name of Sister Mary Rosalie. As a dedicated, compassionate teacher, Miss Moss taught school for 42 years before retiring from the Calcasieu Parish School System. With the love of teaching still in her heart, she then taught at Immaculate Conception Cathedral School. She returned often as a volunteer in the reading lab after she retired from teaching. Jo was a member of ADK teaching sorority, SWLA Historical Society, the Calcasieu Historical Preservation Society, and held many offices in these organizations. She enjoyed being a member of the Red Hat Society and the 12th Night Revelers' Mardi Gras Krewe. She was a member of the Southwest Louisiana Health Counseling Service and a member of the Developmental Disability Council of Louisiana. The Cathedral of Immaculate Conception Catholic Daughters recognized her as Daughter of the Year in 1999. Jo was honored for over 50 years of service to the Cathedral where she served as Eucharistic Minister and sewed many liturgical vestments. Bishop Jude Spyrer also honored her with a medal of honor for Devoted Service to The Diocese of Lake Charles in 2003. In memory of her time in the convent, she was instrumental in establishing a Marianites Memorial Garden at St. Charles Retreat Center. Among her most treasured service organizations were the Serra Club, which is dedicated to enhancing vocations, where she was honored as a Lifetime Member, and Immaculate Conception Cathedral School where she cherished the title of "Honorary Grandmother" at Grandparents' Day. Josephine Moss was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Verle May Clooney, Vincent Corning Moss, Geraldine Moss Gayle and Hubert Davis Moss; by brothers-in-law Clyde Francis Clooney and Thomas Foley Gayle; by sister-in-law Evelyn Moss; and by nephews Paul Barry Gayle, David Moss and Phil Macdonell. Survivors include her sister Mary Ruth Jones and brother-in-law Owen Jones of Kingwood, TX; sisters-in-law Jody Moss of Houston, TX, Mary Moss of La Crescenta, CA, and Elizabeth M. Gayle of Lake Arthur, LA; as well as 31 nieces and nephews, along with their spouses, children and grandchildren. Of special, loving help to Jo in recent years has been nephew Noel Moss and his wife Nancy. Whether you knew her as "Miss Moss," "Miss Jo," "Aunt Jo," "Sister Rosalie" or just "Jo"-she lived a joy-filled life of service to God and to all whom she touched. Her legacy lives on through us all. The funeral for Miss Moss is Monday, April 19, 2010, at 10a.m. at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception Church. Msgr. Charles Dubois and Msgr. Vincent Sedita will officiate. Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.
