Stephen, was the son of Aaron and Olive (Osborn) Powers of Greenwich, MA. Stephen married Elizabeth Hinds on 7 Jun 1787 in Greenwich. Stephen and Elizabeth resided in Greenwich and had the following children:

Elizabeth Powers (1788-1856)
Stephen Powers Jr. (1790-1860)
Francis Powers (1792-1862)
Rhoda Hinds Powers (1798-1866)
Jason Powers (1805-1883)
Rufus Powers (1811-1882)

Although he was a farmer, Stephen enlisted for 3 years in the Continental Army during the Revolution. He served in Col Patterson's Brigade in Capt Dix's Co. which was a component of the 3rd Massachusetts Regiment. In 1818 Stephen applied for and received, a Revolutionary War pension in the amount of $8 per month.
