A SAD DEATH

The unexpected death of Harry E. Hanlin, of St. Joseph, Missouri, is one of the saddest we have chronicled for many months. Among his old friends and schoolmates of this place the greatest feeling has been expressed, while the parents, Prof. and Mrs. John M. Hanlin and daughter, Nellie, are sorely stricken with grief.

He came by his death in a very mysterious way and no certain conclusion has yet been arrived at, except that he was drowned in the Missouri River. About one and a half miles below St. Joe, at the town of Waneta, Kansas, the body was found with the clothes on, floating near the brink.

Decomposition of the body had already set in and although the marks of identification were clear, the corpse was buried until identification could be made and arrangements made for shipment.

Harry was last seen on the Saturday evening before his death, between seven and eight o'clock when he said to a friend that he was going up to the water works above the city. He has been employed for several years at St. Joe as money clerk for the Adams Express Company and leaves a straight and honorable record in that capacity. His last visit to Chariton was in April when he spent several weeks with his parents.

The body arrived here Tuesday night and the funeral took place from the home Wednesday morning at 8 o'clock, conducted by Rev. A. H. Collins. The ladies of the W.R.C. and others tendered floral offerings in profusion. The Wilson Band, Knights of Pythias Lodge and the graduating class of '89, of which he was a member, were present.

The shock rests more severe on Mrs. Hanlin who has been confined to her home from the effects of a fall for several months. The family have the profound sympathy of the whole community. Harry would have been twenty-five years old next month and among his associates he was quite a favorite.

The K. of P. button worn on his coat served to more readily secure his identification. The members of the St. Joe Lodge cared for the remains and sent a brother along with the body, and it was from him that about all that is known of the sad affair was gleaned.
