Funeral services for James Oliver Burns, 96, will be held at 2 P.M., Friday, April 16, 2010, at First United Methodist Church in DeRidder with Rev. Mike McLaurin officiating. Burial will follow in Beauregard Cemetery in DeRidder under the direction of Labby Memorial Funeral Home in DeRidder. Mr. Burns passed away Monday, April 12, 2010, in Bay Wind Village Nursing Home in League City, Texas. Visitation will be from 7 P.M. until 9 P.M., Thursday, April 15, 2010, and from 9 A.M. until 12 Noon, Friday, April; 16, 2010, at Labby Memorial Funeral Home in DeRidder. Visitation will resume from 1 P.M. until service time Friday, April 16, 2010, at First United Methodist Church in DeRidder. Mr. Burns was born in Grimes County, Texas, and lived in Groves, Texas, most of his life before retiring in DeRidder, Louisiana, where he lived for 25 years. He was retired from Texaco, Inc., refinery in Port Neches, Texas. He was known for his craftsmanship in woodworking. He was a charter member of Groves United Methodist Church in Groves, Texas, and a long time member of First United Methodist Church in DeRidder, Louisiana. He was a member of Beauregard Cattleman's Association. He is survived by daughters Gail Rogers and husband Victor of Pearland, Texas, and Janis Ballard and husband Billy of Kemah, Texas; brothers Joe Burns of The Woodlands, Texas, and Carl Burns of Nederland, Texas; sisters Mildred Lasyon of Nederland, Texas, and Hulene Chevalier of Beaumont, Texas; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Burns and daughter, Barbara Burns.
