Malcolm Smyth Chapman was born on June 10, 1907, to Thomas Lyon Chapman and Laura Mae Smyth in Manti, Utah. He was the oldest of the couples seven children.

His mother passed away when he was only 16-years-old, in 1924. After his sister, Anne's, death in March of 1923, his mother had been hospitalized at the UTMH. She was there for over 10 months before she died. Several months later, his father remarried Lavern Maylett.

In his early 20's, he moved from Manti to Salt Lake City where he was working as a clerk, for the Grabateria, near Westminster College. Here he met Virginia Dorothy Millgate. They were married on September 10, 1929 in SLC. Shortly after the marriage the couple moved in with Virginia's mother in Kaysville, Utah. Malcolm continued working at the Grabateria until at least 1936.

During that time the couple welcomed two children:
Beverly Chapman 1930–1996
Malcolm Smyth Chapman Jr. 1932–1988

Malcolm and Virginia divorced sometime in 1940. He died on New Year's Day, January 1, 1978, in Manti, Utah.
