Helen Crean was a recipient of the Croix de Guerre from France. During World War I, she was a civilian nurse for the American Fund for French Wounded. She received the award for distinguished service under fire while in the 5th Marine Regiment's area of operations near Glorieu, France when she continued to attend to the patients at her nursing station during a bombing and machine gun attack. During World War II, Crean was a member of the Marine Corps Women Reserve. She served Marine Corps Air Station Ewa near Honolulu, Hawaii and attained the rank of Major. Crain was one of two female Marines to receive the Bronze Star Medal for World War II service.
