US Congressman. Elected as a Jacksonian to represent New York's 1st District in the Twenty-First and Twenty-Second Congresses, he served from 1829 until his death. Born in Newtown, New York, he spent most of his early adulthood as a local merchant while studying law privately. From 1823 to 1829 he was a judge of Queens County, resigning upon taking his seat in the US House. For his second term he was Chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in the State Department. Lent died in Washington, DC and was originally buried at Congressional Cemetery; he was later reinterred in the cemetery for the First Presbyterian Church of Newtown in Elmhurst. This burial ground was demolished in 1958 and the existing remains, most unidentified, were transferred to the Cemetery of the Evergreens in Brooklyn. It is uncertain if Lent was among them.
