Joseph A. Hershberger was born to Abraham and Magdalena (Miller) Hershberger and married Veronica "Franey" Miller in January of 1833. They were in the first group of Amish Mennonites, who moved on wagons to Elkhart County, Indiana from Somerset County, Pennsylvania in 1842. They settled on a farm 4 miles southeast of Middlebury and were members of the Forks Mennonite Church. On Wednesday, March 20, 1901, Joe died at the home of his daughter Anna, the wife of Daniel P. Miller. At death, he had 60 grandchildren, 166 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
