Executive director of Trio Programs at Southern University and the Louisiana State Representative for District 63, he died at 3 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, 2010, at LSU Earl K. Long Medical Center. He was 62, a resident of Baton Rouge and native of Scotlandville. Visiting at F.G. Clark Activity Center, Southern University, on Friday, Feb. 19, from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., followed by a program from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. conducted by Johnny G. Anderson. Viewing at Greater King David Baptist Church on Saturday, Feb. 20, from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., followed by a religious service at 11 a.m., conducted by Darlene A. Moore, pastor of Camphor Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment in Southern Memorial Gardens.

Survived by his wife, Linda J. Gray Honey; daughter, Theonne Alise Honey, of New York; stepdaughter, Kimberly Bell; sisters, Melba Ann Honey and Jackie H. Murphy, of Baton Rouge; stepsister, Gayle H. Davis, pastor, of Baton Rouge; sister-in-law, Cynthia R. Gray James, of Gonzales; brother, Edwin "Gil" Honey, of Baton Rouge; stepbrothers, Stanley Hayes, Vincent Honey and Mark Honey, all of Bato Rouge; brother-in-law, Elvin Gray III, of Gonzales; and mother-in-law, Eva W. Gray, of Gonzales.

Preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Matilda Flowers Honey.

He received the master's degrees in Science and the graduate of Scotlandville "High Hornets" class of 1965. He was affiliated with numerous professional and religious organizations. As a member of the Louisiana Legislature who served definite 63, his involvements included serving as chairman of the house committee on labor and industrial revelations, ways and means, and the joint committee on capital outlay. He was a member of the Democratic caucus, capital region legislative delegation and the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus. He was also a member of Camphor Memorial United Methodist Church, Baton Rouge Kiwanis Early Risers, Scotlandville Alumni Association and the Zulu Pleasures and Social Club.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Avon Ray Honey Memorial Scholarship, 8776 Scenic Highway, Baton Rouge, LA 70807.
