Melvin L. Manthei, 78, Rockford, died Mon., June 29, 1998, at home i the loving care of his family after a courageous battle with cancer. Born Feb. 20, 1920, in Kent, IL, the son of Edwin and Elizabeth (Fehr) Manthei. Married the former Shirley J. Kronberg in Freeport on Sept. 24, 1949. U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a chief petty officer for five years. He was a recipient of many medals, serving in the South Pacific Theatre. He was employed by the former George D. Roper Corp for 10 years, and retired from Rockford Clutch-Division of Borg Warner Corp. as a Class-A machinist in 1982 after 23 years. Member of UAW Union Local 803.

Survivors include wife, Shirley; daughter, Lynne Largent; sons, James (Vicki) Manthei and Jeffrey Manthei; five grandsons; brother, Kenneth (Katherine) Manthei; sister, Mabel (Harold) Boelk. Predeceased by parents; and three brothers in infancy.
