Although born and raised in NY, he settled in Minn. His profession was mining and mineral exploration. In his later years, he retired to Washington state.

Asa served in the Civil War. He was a Sgt. in Co. C of the 37th NY Heavy Artillery. He lost much of his hearing as a result of the war.

"CAMP ASA E. Age at enlistment, 18 years. Enlisted, May 15, 1861 at Alleghany, to serve two years; mustered in as private, Co. H, June 7, 1861; promoted corporal, Jenuary 15, 1863; captured in action, May 3, 1863, at Chancellorsville, Va.; returned to company, June 6, 1863; mustered out with company, June 22, 1863, at New York city; subsequent service with the Thirteenth Artillery."
