Vivian Woodward Whitney is the daughter of Wellington B. Whitney and Minnie Ella Woodward. Vivian married Edmund Dennis Burke on August 22, 1951 in Maine.

BANGOR - Vivian W. Burke, 94, died Friday, Nov. 26, 2010, in Bangor. She was born March 9, 1916, in Jonesboro, daughter of the late Wellington and Minnie (Woodward) Whitney. Vivian left Maine in her early 20s to move to Massachusetts, where she graduated from Robert Breck Brigham Hospital School of Nursing. She did private duty work for a short time and then was employed at the Lahey Clinic, Boston, now in Burlington, Mass., where she operated radiation therapy machines. Her work eventually took her to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass. She was married to Edmund Burke, who died in 1975 after a long illness. She maintained her home in Framingham, Mass., and after retirement in 1978, she learned to play duplicate bridge, which she enjoyed immensely, and made many new friends. She also took up cross-country skiing and snow shoeing. She was a member of First Methodist Church, Framingham, Mass., and always participated in fundraising events. In 2003 she moved to Sunbury Village, Bangor, to be closer to her relatives. She was predeceased by two sisters, Evelyn Noyes and Leona Look. Vivian is survived by two nieces, Joan Brown of Winslow and Lena Grover of Kittery; and nephews, Jere Look, Gene Look and Wellington "Billy" Noyes, all of Jonesboro and Elliott Noyes of Naples, Fla. Services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 220 Court St., Machias. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery, Jonesboro.
