Wm. Harry Briggs was the eldest of the four children of William Alexander Briggs and Mary Ann "Mollie" Glant. Harry was 9 years old when his mother died of typhoid fever in July 1880. His father married Laura Templeton in 1882. Tragedy struck again three years later when the youngest sibling, Buoth, drowned in 1885.

Harry served in the Spanish American War as a Machinist Mate First Class (First Class Petty Officer) and spent time on the Battleship "Indiana." It is thought that he sailed on the "Marblehead" around Cape Horn at the tip of South America to San Francisco about 1899, after the war.

After his military service, Harry married Mary Catherine "Mamie" Brower. Harry and Mamie survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. They lost everything and lived for a time in Golden Gate Park in a tent city. In 1910 they were living east of San Francisco in Contra Costa County but they returned to the city where daughter Grace was born 17 Oct 1910.

Harry's father, William, travelled once to San Francisco to visit the small family when Grace was a young girl [see photo next page].

Harry is buried at Cypress Lawn Cemetery at Oak Mound. His wife Mamie is buried in the Brower family plot across the road in Upper Section F.
