His mother was Mary Elizabeth Pollock, born circa 1837 in Connecticut; died after 1872, probably in Mississippi. Mary was the widow of John Deering of Ohio.

From a clipping my grandmother saved, probably from the Union City Daily Messenger:

Unexpected Death
of Ben Holley

-----

Mr. Ben Holley died unexpectedly last week on Thursday, May 19, 1927, at his home north of Union City.

Mr. Holley arose early and, after feeding the stock and eating his breakfast, sat down on the front porch. There he expired at 7:30 o'clock.

Mr. Holley was a native of Mississippi, but has been a resident of Obion County for a number of years. He was married here to Miss Reece and leaves his wife and a son and a daughter. His daughter is the wife of Mr. Herman Oliver, this city.

Mr. Holley was 57 years of age. He was a member of the Baptist Church and a Mason, a citizen of fine character and integrity and generally esteemed by the people of his community.

The remains were interred at Liberty, with services at the church, conducted by Rev. Oscar L. Rives.

Death of B. F. Holly

-----

The death angel visited another home last Thursday morning and claimed Mr. Ben Holly. Mr. Holly was born Sept. 5, 1870 [actually 1869]. At the time of his death, he was 57 years, 7 months, 19 days. He was a good christian man and a member of the Missionary Baptist Church.

He leaves a devoted wife, one son, James Hamilton Holly, one daughter, Mrs. Herman Oliver, and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his absence. Two baby girls, one 9 months old and one sixteen months old have already gone before him.

With the aid of his good wife, he reared five orphan children and they loved him as a child loves his father. He [was] always good to the poor, afflicted and those in trouble. He would at any time lend a helping hand.

"Uncle Ben" as he was better known was a friend to everyone. We are deeply grieved in parting from him, but God in Heaven does all things for the best and we are trusting in him to comfort our aching hearts. We feel sure he is with the Master and will some day welcome to our home in glory.

To the bereaved relatives and loved ones we extend our deepest love and sympathy. May God's blessing rest upon each one.

A FRIEND.
