His wife was Blanche Dudley Collins the daughter of Andrew Dudley. Jairus was the son of Hartwell and Louise Williams Collins of Clayton, Alabama. Jairus and his brother, Justus Collins were coal operators with mines in McDowell, Mercer, Raleigh, and Kanawha Counties. They established the Louisville Coal & Coke Company at Goodwill, Mercer County, and the Greenbrier Coal and Coke Company at McDowell, McDowell County. In 1905, Jairus and Justus Collins bought the Goodwill Coke & Coke Company from Philip Goodwill. This event marked the beginning of Winding Gulf Collieries Company which eventually became a very large corporation with several mines. Jairus was General manager of their company mines in McDowell and Mercer Counties.

Jairus and Blanche had two children: Jairus Jr. and Virginia.
