CHARLES J. SIMMONS

Amoung the many victims of this unholy war is Charles J. Simmons, a native of Charlenton,S.C. He was wounded in the battle of Seven Pines by fragment of shell which terminated his existence on the 15th day of July last.

In private life the deceased substained a high character as an honest and straight forward man. his habits were sober indusruious and secured him the confidenee and appreciation of those who knew him best.

Though physically infirm he felt that his services were due to to his bleeding country and thus convinced. left wife and children to strike a blow for her independence.
He was faithful and couscientious in camp as in all his business relations. every duty was religously performed; every order strictly executed. on the Battle Feild he confronted the foe with unblenching eye and steady nerve until death.resistless congueror, pierced him with his fatal arrow.

The deceased was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church in this District near which he had resided for many years.
In his intercourse with men he showed that his profession of religin was no shallow pretence or hypocritical affecation, but that his heart was sincere in its devotion earnest in its love of the church and indeed the temple of the Living GOD. But he is gone hence to engage in a higher, purer and holier worship. To his weeping wife and two little children we would say let his patriotic example and religious life furnish grounds for consolation and comfort.
