Baltimore photographer William Ashman, son of Alfred and Anna Ashman, learned his trade under the tutelage of his maternal uncle, William M. Chase (Ashman's mother, who died in 1903, was the sister of William M. Chase's wife, Sarah).

Ashman then worked for the Bachrach Brothers in Baltimore; he left to open his own studio in 1877. He died at his property in Saranac Lake, Pine View Villa, leaving a widow, Anna Bertha Ashman, and a daughter, Anna Louise Ashman.According to the terms of his will, his associate, Mr. Oregon M. Dennis, was to continue operating the photography studio at 17 W. Lexington Street on behalf of Ashman's heirs.

Ashman was a member of the Concordia Lodge of Masons and involved with the 4th Regiment of the Maryland Militia.
